Light Bars: Here’s What You Need to Know

Aftermarket light bars are becoming an increasingly popular way for truck owners to upgrade their vehicles. Whether you’re looking to add extra light for off-roading, or whether you work in an industry where a greater amount of light would be beneficial (road-work, construction, etc.), light bars can be a solution.

Furthermore, once they are installed, they require very little maintenance. In fact, a quality LED light bar can easily last for 100,000 hours.

But if you are new to light bars, selecting the right one can be confusing.

Here are a few tips when selecting an aftermarket light bar:

Understanding Lumens

Lumens are a measure of how much light you will get from your light bar. The more lumens, the brighter the light will be. When you are comparing light bars, it is helpful to check how many lumens they produce in order to give you an idea of how bright they will be.

Comparing Wattage

Whereas lumens shows you how much light will be produced, wattage shows you how much power it is going to take to produce that light. Ideally, you will want to look for a light bar that has a higher amount of lumens but a lower amount of wattage. That way, you can still get a good amount of light without draining your truck’s battery.

Consider Using Multiple Light Bars

Depending on your reason for needing light bars on your vehicle, you may want to consider using more than one. For example, if you purchase two smaller light bars rather than one large one, you have the option of angling them in slightly different directions to provide you with a greater radius of illumination.

Check the Reviews

Finally, when you’ve narrowed your selection down to two or three choices, go online and check the reviews for the light bars that you are considering. Reading unbiased reviews will help you understand the pros and cons of different light bar choices. If you can, find some photos or videos featuring the light bars so you can see what they look like in action.

Mounting Your Light Bar

Once you have selected your light bar, the next step is to mount it on your vehicle. For this, you will require a quality mounting bracket, such as the one offered by BACKRACK™. The BACKRACK™ light bar bracket provides a solid base for your light bar to sit on and is compatible with all Backrack™s except for the Three Light Rack.

After you have affixed the light bar bracket and light bar to your vehicle, you will need to wire the light to the relay switch and connect it to the battery.
